Designs and preliminary working drawings for villa F, c. July 1800 (4)

Notes

Drawings 37 to 40 show the final developments in the design process for a villa at Acton. They all vary slightly from each other, however. Virginia Brilliant's TS catalogue suggests that drawings 39 and 40 seem likely because of the similarity of appearance, to correspond to drawings 37 and 38 although undated. However, Brilliant also indicates that they could be some of the earliest designs for Pitzhanger. Perhaps by this point Soane was working with a certain amount of flexibility and made designs with both sites in mind.

Drawings 39 and 40 certainly appear to be variant designs for the ground floor, 39 including a pencil sketch for the large oval room and projecting bay which is repeated in pen on drawing 40.

Drawing 37's inscription 'Band boxes' refers to a cupboard for the storage of the said band boxes, which were (often paper covered) cases for hats, collars and general millinery.
