Designs for villa E with bow on side, 14 July 1800 (3)
Notes
Drawings 32 to 34 clearly show the familiar curved shape of villa E on each of its three floors. The principal oval room is continued on all three levels. Drawing 34 shows the outer retaining walls, also visible in drawing 32, which enclose spaces for storing coal.
Virginia Brilliant's TS catalogue suggests that drawing 32 is very similar to some of the first designs for Pitzhanger in plan and that it probably inspired them.
The inscription sopha [sofa] on drawing 32 shows that even at this early stage of planning Soane was thinking about the internal arrangments of furniture.
