Alternative preliminary designs for the ceiling of the drawing room, 1758-59 (2)
Notes
This room, in the eastern half of the new extension, was Adam's first executed interior in England following his return from the Grand Tour. The ceiling, (closest to parts of Adam volume 11/2) which remains in situ, makes use of the heavy ornamentation of the early Adam style, but also some neo-classical motifs such as trophies, anthemia, putti and urns, which point to the development of his more mature style, as at Hatchlands and Shardeloes. This ceiling is similar in design to one for Hatchlands (SM Adam volume 11/7).
