Purpose
[11] Design for a ceiling for the dining room, 1775
Aspect
Plan of a square ceiling, with narrow arches on each side, and deep arches on each end. The narrow arches to either side are ornamented with bands of scrolled hearts, and the broad arches at each end are ornamented with bands of scrolled hearts and enclosed rosettes connected by drops of calyx, and forming a lozenge pattern. The square central flat has a central medallion encircled by a band of enclosed calyx, and a wreath forming a guilloche pattern and enclosing a mask crossed with thyrsi at each corner, and the whole encircled by a vine with a rectangular panel in each corner containing putti flanking an urn, and supporting a lantern
