Record drawing for a frieze for the dressing room, N.D. (1)

Notes

It is not possible to date this drawing as it is included in a volume of record drawing frieze designs, which includes friezes from various architectural projects from throughout the Adam office. See appendix on volume 53.

As it is not possible to date this design, it is not known whether it was produced in the 1760s for 41 Portman Square, or in the 1770s for 21 Portman Square. None of James's Adam's designs for number 41 were executed, and it is worthy of note that this frieze does not have any aesthetic similarities with the extant chimneypiece for the number 41 dressing room (Adam volume 22/230). The frieze may have been intended for number 21, which was substantially altered during the nineteenth century, but no frieze corresponding to this design survives at the house.
