Purpose

Preliminary design for a fire grate, 1765 (1)

Notes

It is not known for which room this fire grate was designed, or indeed if it was ever executed.

In November 1767 Adam charged Lord Coventry £2.2s. for a grate for the chimneypiece in Lady Coventry's octagonal dressing room, and £3.3s. for that in the great room, but the earlier date on this drawing must preclude it from being related to either of these.
