Purpose

Alternative designs for pier glass frames for the gallery, 1765, drawing 10 as executed (3)

Notes

Although these drawings are very similar, it was Adam volume 20/12 that was executed. An inventory of 1768 includes a pair of pier glasses to this design, as well as an overmantel mirror frame by Adam, for which no drawings survive. According to Harris, these were probably made by France and Bradburn, and she has noted that the pier glasses are almost identical to those in the red drawing room at Syon (SM Adam volume 20/14). Both pier glasses were sold by the Marquess of Zetland in 1934, and then again at Sotheby's, London, on 8 June 2005.
