Purpose

Preliminary design, finished drawings and a record drawing for mirror frames with semicircular tops for the drawing room, as executed, 1772 (5)

Notes

The drawing room was in the north-west corner of the house, on the first-floor, between the Duchess of Bolton's dressing room and the great drawing room. It was remodelled by Adam in 1772-73, and with these large gilt mirror frames it became the most lavish interior within the house.

The mirror frame in Adam volume 20/82 was placed above the chimneypiece; that in Adam volume 20/83 was designed for the two piers between the windows; the one in Adam volumes 20/84 and 20/85 was the largest - 9x10 feet - and was designed for the wall at the south end of the room.
