Purpose

Design for an urn motif plasterwork ornament, c1760-62 (1)

Notes

According to Campbell Hatfield the figures depicted in this design are from the story of Hercules (identified by his club) rescuing the Hesperides. However, there is some confusion about this object. Campbell Hatfield assumes it is a metal object, and Harris lists it as a plate warmer, but Snodin has suggested that the handling and shadowing on the vase seems to suggest it is a design for a piece of low-relief plasterwork decoration for a wall.
