Purpose

Alternative design, finished drawing and record drawing for a chimneypiece for the drawing room, pre-1769 and 1769, Adam volume 22/52-53 thought to be executed with alterations (3)

Notes

The drawing room at Alnwick was clover leaf-shaped, and decorated in pink, green and white. According to Harris, Adam volume 22/51 predates Adam’s work at Alnwick, and is not known to have been executed. However, Adam volumes 22/52-53 are thought to show the executed chimneypiece design, albeit with an alternative frieze. The executed chimneypiece included a neo-classical frieze, calling the overall decorative style of the room into question. The eighteenth-century interior of this room was demolished by Sir Anthony Salvin in the 1850s.
