Purpose

Preliminary design and finished drawings for an inn, 1759-61 (2)

Notes

The water at Kedleston is naturally sulphurous, prompting Curzon to establish a spa in the park, and to build this inn for those who came to take the water. It originally included a port-cochère though this does not survive. In the nineteenth century the inn became a farmhouse, but reverted back into a hotel in 1967. The walled gardens to either side were executed, but have since been filled in with rooms, and the wall is now punctured with windows. The stable yard is now a car park.
