Variant preliminary designs for an unidentified villa in a late Gothic style, 80 feet by 51 feet (5)

Notes

The villa with its principal front facing south-east is interesting for its handling of light and circulation. The entrance is through a porte-cochere wide enough to reveal the front door and its side windows. The visitor rises a few steps in to a double-height hall with a gallery above and stairs visible on either side. The hall is enclosed by two storeys of open arched screens, the third bay of which, reached by three steps, spans the long axis beyond which is a vaulted lobby. Lit by generous windows, the hall, gallery and principal stair with their transparent screen would have been light and sunny. The four reception rooms, and a smaller study or dressing room, are also well lit with windows on two sides. As in some other of Dance's house plans, the doors are not placed opposite each other so that vistas are off-centre and not enfilade. The device of a galleried hall with the stair to one side adapted for a smaller house is explored with enthusiasm though Dance's design is at an early stage.
