Notes

The drawing shows 11 steps of a staircase including a curtail step; the blue-washed railing seems feminine in character.

Though this design is filed with the drawings for Ashburnham, there is no obvious relationship unless it is assumed that it relates to a stair from the first floor to the attics. A plan of the first floor ([SM D2/1/37]) shows opposite Dance's new ground floor to first floor staircase, a half-turn with landings stair. This has short flights of five (including curtail), nine and seven risers. Another smaller stair with nine steps including a curtail is pencilled in. Drawing [SM D2/5/20] shows the half-turn with landing stair again but with eight risers including a curtail, 13 risers and eight risers.
