Notes

Dance drew the section first and then, with a brush, dashed in a circular lantern over one with a hipped roof. An alternative treatment is tried out for the portico with one pair of columns on a pedestal with Doric amended to Ionic capitals.

This first design has the essentials of the executed design including the reverse imperial stair (that is, with a double lower run and single upper run) but, for example, coupled Ionic columns (washed in Indian red, perhaps to suggest porphyry, with black capitals and bases) are used for the north and south 'porticos' and a large, Classical frieze is shown above them.
