Notes

The drawing shows the stately progression from the double flight of 14 steps to a broad landing broken by three steps either side (Landing A) to a single flight of eight steps to landing B and up a further eight steps; a total of 33 steps. Earlier drawings show a different rhythm for the upper flight; for example, in [SM D2/5/31] five steps preface landing B followed by 12 steps, with 34 steps in all.

Robert Spiller's accounts for mason's work including the staircase, 1813-14, itemises 'Portland [stone] via Hastings' with plain, sunk, moulded, circular and other finishes for the 'Grand Staircase'. A bill, 9-14 August 1813 for 'travelling to Ashburnham, drawing out staircase at large / [that is, making mason's shop drawings] assisting to make shops and sheds for Masons and Sawyers' came to £2.4s.4d. (ASH 2814).
