Notes

Stroud publishes this drawing as the 'selected design'. It is a nicely finished (perhaps presentation) drawing but the difficulty is that, because of the re-modelling of 1853, visual evidence for the exterior of Dance's work at Ashburnham relies on the simple 'as executed elevation' ([SM D2/1/15] verso and [SM D2/1/7]) or the very simplified elevation shown on a print of 1813 (published in Country Life, CXIII, 1953, p.1337). In both, the porte-cochere frieze is shown as a series of lozenges as in the following drawing.

The 'selected design' shows the porte-cochere with Indian pinnacles, that is, inverted cupped paterae or domed caps with slender, lotus-like leaves and florid finials. The proportions of the entrance are Indian and the frieze (disregarding the shields) akin to a detail found in Indian architecture. For Dance's use of Indian architectural elements see the note on the Guildhall, London.
