Notes

Clearly Dance enjoyed the design of ornament for he made many alternatives and variants and seems to have relished the task of drawing out full-size details. This drawing and its companion [SM D2/2/25] are good examples of his 'technical' drawings where, leaving nothing to chance, Dance draws and renders details in a way that is both comprehensive and realistic. The arched corbel-frieze supporting a parapet was the crowning horizontal feature and an important element in the refacing of the east front. Bernasconi (if it was him) added a dotted pencil line to indicate which part of the drawing was to be pricked for transfer and additionally used white chalk on the back of the drawing as another aid to transfer. Both drawings are stained and the copying was probably done in the workshop. Dance often used dotted lines on his full-size details, usually as an indication of where the tradesman should prick through to copy the profile of moulding.

Essentially this design (presumably as executed) corresponds to the 'as executed' design ([SM D2/1/15] verso) though greatly developed.
