Notes
The eight drawings all show the proposed entrance with portico placed on the west side of the house and, importantly, linked to the through axis or enfilade arrangement stretching from west to east. Soane's design would have involved demolishing the old gallery wing and Lord Eliot was unwilling to allow this.
