Notes
Drawn by Dance and nicely finished with sky and trees, the design is for a gateway with polygonal piers or 'turrets' flanked by screen walls linked by quadrant curves to twin lodges. Behind the screen wall, either side of the gateway, are colonnades completed at each end by a loggia. The pedimented lodges have panelled pilasters near their corners and a single central chimney. The gateway has Vitruvian scroll cresting symmetrically arranged around a central palmette (in an Indian manner) and the caps to the piers are decorated with antefixae. The composition of lodges, wall and gate is more than 140 feet wide; subsequent schemes reduced the amount of wall, to the detriment of the design.
