Notes

The soffit depicted in this seventeenth-century drawing is decorated with interwoven and plaited ribbon, bordered on one side by a framed band of stunted fluting. The soffit and accompanying border are paralleled in a mid- sixteenth-century drawing now in Naples, while the soffit – minus the border – is also seen in a drawing in Saint Petersburg. Both the Naples and the Saint Petersburg depictions give the location as Capua (‘Santa Maria di Capua’). Platted ribbon decoration of this kind is seen, as Campbell noted, on the underside of the architrave of the Hadrianeum, but this latter example has a different border.
