Notes
Seemingly a base for a candelabrum, this object has a bottom zone decorated with sphinxes, a level above decorated with ram’s heads and an eagle supporting a male nude positioned, at an even higher level, between zoomorphic volutes, which then carry a columnar superstructure. Ashby thought the design was imaginary which may be correct as there are no obvious ancient parallels for such a composition. The drawing is in the same style as others produced during the codex’s second phase of production.
