Purpose

[8] Design for the hall ceiling for Bowood, 1761, executed with minor alterations

Aspect

Plan of a rectangular, tripartite ceiling, divided by bands of fluting. There is a central square compartment containing a circle of acanthus leaves, with a central patera encircled by a band of enclosed anthemia, and with anthemia and rinceaux in each corner. The central square compartment is flanked by tripartite rectangular compartments, each with a rosette enclosed by a fan at each end. The whole ceiling has an additional, rectangular compartment to the right-hand side, with an unornamented central flat
