Notes

This is beautifully finished and, in the manner of many of Dance's 'technical' drawings, very legible. The Ionic capital with egg and dart, anthemion and a disc-like eye is probably based on the Ionic order from the Temple of Ilissus, illustrated in J. Stuart & N. Revett, The Antiquities of Athens, volume I, 1762, chapter II, plates I-VIII, though with an extra spiral to the volute and with a plain shaft. Dance owned a set of The Antiquities of Athens volumes.
