Mr Alcot's name appears on one other Dance drawing at the Soane ([SM D1/3/7]). R. Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851, 2nd ed. [1964] lists an 'Allcott or Alcot, Joseph fl. 1796-1815' who began life as a carpenter but by watching Italian scagliolists at work soon learned the secret of the process.
