The Villa was built by Carlo Marchionni (1702-86) for Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692-1779), and was completed in 1764. An aspect of the design that particularly interested Soane was the saloon or gallery that with other rooms, well lined with alcoves, housed the Cardinal's collection of classical sculpture arranged by Johann Winckelmann in 1765.
A further sheet of drawings with a plan and three elevations of the saloon and a plan of the piano nobile of the Villa Albani, made by Soane, is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (Box A131, no.3436.189 recto and verso. See P.du Prey, Sir John Soane, 1985, in series of 'Catalogues of architectural drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum', catalogue 5).
