Notes
This drawing, SM volume 76/65 and SM volume 76/66 show the old house in grey wash and Soane's additions in pink wash, on three floors. From the plans it can be seen that much of the old structure was retained and the additions, whilst enlarging the house dimensions, really introduced an element of symmetry to the structure as well.
The drawing, a plan of the basement, shows three staircases, the stair to the east (left) was part of old house (as can be seen on SM 66/5/10 and SM 66/5/11). Soane has added a new stair to the south (which was probably the main stair) and an additional external staircase to the basement, on the far west (right) side. The majority of Soane's additions project to the south.
