[27] Alternative preliminary design for a gatehouse, 1787, unexecuted
Aspect
Alternative sketch elevation of a gatehouse with a central arch surmounted by a clock tower and steeple, with pedimented openings and a weathervane, flanked by additional arches with stepped gables and corner corbelled bartizans. The elevation is adorned with machicolated cornices, arched windows, and crosses. There is an additional sketch of the steeple as well as some round towers

This drawing appears to have been influenced by the medieval Netherbow Port of Edinburgh which was demolished in 1764 and engraved in William Maitland’s History of Edinburgh (1753).
