Sketch elevation of a gatehouse with a central arched surmounted by a clock tower and steeple with pedimented openings flanked by round towers with pepper-pot roofs. Flanking the central arch is a smaller arch with a corner corbelled bartizan. The entire elevation is adorned with moulded cornices, machicolated cornices, and arched windows

This design appears to have been influenced by the medieval Netherbow Port of Edinburgh which was demolished in 1764 and engraved in William Maitland’s History of Edinburgh (1753).
