The Board asked very / few questions respecting this / plan1, their attention was / directed to the Estimate, to / know why the Estimate del[ivere]d / with this design exceeded / the former del[ivere]d the (blank) / so much - & I inserted the reasons / in my report then before them / J.S., 1 it appeared as if they / had determined to adopt it / before I was called in., NB. The plan of the / Infirmary was shewn / to dr. Moseley on the / nursing (7 June) before / it went to the Board, / who saw no objection to / the arrangements proposed, 7 June 1810. Plan submitted to the / Board of Com[missioner]s. at Chelsea / this day & fully approved, except by / Sir D. Dundas who having asked what / space was left at KK. I answered / about 12 feet, he replied that was not / sufficient for a carriage way which was to be / reserved for the new villa!!! (his words were to Col[one]l. Gordons premises) / this observation was particularly addressed to Mr. Levy? who made no reply in my hearing, If Colonade (sic) : the Col[umn]s. / in front of the old / Garden Room will suit / (speak to Mr. Copland / about them (ab[ou]t. 10 or 12 / pounds each)., Qy / XX Then partitions at all / events only 7 or 8 feet / high but perhaps / entirely omitted, Oct: 1810 / A. This design could be labelled 'design B' as by this point Soane had succumbed to the Board of Commissioners' wishes that the new Infirmary should involve the conversion of at least part of Yarborough House. Thus as Margaret Richardson writes, the new design 'consisted of a long range of buildings running east-west from which two wings extended south', as shown in SM 67/5/9.
This drawing, SM 67/5/12, SM 67/5/13 and SM 67/5/11 indicate the parts of Yarborough House (marked in grey) considered for conversion to the new Infirmary. The extent of conversion increases within this group of plans, with SM 67/5/12 detailing only the matron's room, visiting apothecary, one ward and the nurses' common room (as labelled here) as part of that conversion. The following three plans also include another ward for eight patients, as part of the re-use.
