Notes
Sir George's room was on the northwest corner and incorporated part of the old walls. On plan ([SM D1/10/29], [SM D1/10/28], [SM D1/10/34], [SM D1/10/30], [SM D1/10/17], [SM D1/10/32] and [SM D1/10/23]), it is shown with quadrant corners and an adjacent water closet and powdering room; a separate stair led to a bathroom in the basement. Here, the small door to the powdering room has a circular borrowed light over it and a plain, white chimney-piece is shown. The drop-arched entrance and lancet-arched window are set off by wide architraves with twin panelled pilasters whose pared-down Classicism makes an effective frame for these Gothic openings. Dance's colour scheme shows walls that are a sage green but blue-green in shadow. Now
(1999) only the west side of the room with window, swept corners, cornice and skirting remains unchanged.
