Purpose
Finished drawing, detail and record drawing for a gateway and lodges, 1779-1782, unexecuted (3)
Notes
The gateway and lodges were executed by John Carr, and though Adam's design was not used, it is thought that Carr was in possession of a drawing by Adam as his design is sympathetic to it. The Adam drawing which Carr is thought to have used to make his own design for the gateway is now belongs to the Harewood House Trust, and is similar to those in the Soane Museum (Adam volumes 35/22, 35/23, 23/237), but with minor alterations. The gateway leads into Harewood village - east of the park - which was largely rebuilt by Carr in the 1760s.
