Browse
Reference number
SM Adam volume 1/74
Purpose
[16] Preliminary design for the principal elevation of a group of prison buildings for Edinburgh Bridewell, 1791, unexecuted
Aspect
Elevation of a two-storey, five-bay Governor’s house in the central foreground, over a half-sunk basement, with a balustraded perron. There is an arched intrance with a decorated entablature above. Behind, and flanking the Governor’s house, is another prison building comprising a wide four-storey building with three gabled attic storeys, with flanking single-storey links shown in-part. One gabled end is an additional storey in height and appears to be of a different design to the other gable end. The principal floor across the entire elevation is rusticated and there are a mixture of windows in recessed arches, as well as slit, square, arched, tri-partite, and Venetian windows. Other adornments include string-coursing, machicolated cornices, crenelations, crosses, heraldry and bartizans
