Purpose

Design for an Etruscan chimneypiece, 1777 NO IMAGE

Aspect

Elevation of a chimneypiece with Doric pilaster styles, with turned bases ornamented with acanthus leaves. The styles are ornamented with panels depicting pedestals, which support turned balusters surmounted by urns, which suspend drop calyx above this paterae are set within panels, flanked by ram masks, and with aprons of ox skulls and festoons of husks. The frieze is ornamented with a band of guilloche enclosing rosettes, and set within bands of rope moulding. Above this there is a band of foil enclosing rosettes, with calyx set within semi-circular-headed compartments above. The capitals contain roundels depicting winged sphinxes and these are surrounded by rosettes. The mantelpiece is ornamented with a band of laurel leaf tips
