Notes
R. Gunnis's Dictionary of British sculptors 1660-1851, 2nd ed. [1964] notes that Robert Spiller (fl.1794-1827) was the master mason for the Royal College of Surgeons and was responsible for all of the carved architectural work including the chimney-pieces. His name appears in the Royal College of Surgeons Accounts (daywork) from July 1807 onwards throughout the two building contracts. He also worked on other of Dance's buildings; see also Appendix 4.
