Notes
The lamp shown here (and on [SM D5/9/18], 111-113) has flat, tapered, jointed sides, a flat base and what appears to be a mantle suggesting gas lighting; oil lamps were globular in form. Experimental street gas lighting was introduced in London from 1807 and Dance, as architect to the City of London and because of his own practical bent, would have welcomed the new technology.
