Notes
Drawn to a 1/5 inch to 1 foot scale, this is assumed to be an early drawing and is in many ways superior to the executed design. It differs in the plain treatment of the arch without mouldings and the fenestration of the bays either side of the centre, while the raised tablet, crowning urns, and wreaths on the frieze drawn here were omitted. It may be that the more emphatic crowning features of this initial design made the back front too 'important' (and expensive) and were dropped. Interestingly, the 'suppression/omission of the upper mouldings of the cornice' (the cymatium) that Soane commented on (see the notes on the Portugal Street front below) is shown and, because here the blocking course and tablet separate pediment and cornice, works rather better than in the executed design. The mouldings between architrave and frieze are minimal.
