Notes

Dance's watercolour perspective though rapidly executed shows the essentials of his final scheme for the double bridge and also shows the crescent 'piazza' to the north. The buttresses flanking the drawbridge rise above the parapet emphasising its castle-like character and the flags indicate which of the two drawbridges is raised. In the foreground stands a gentleman (Dance?) and a seated beggar. The drawing is a preliminary one for Plate XVI of the 'Third Report'.
