Notes
Dr T. Friedman (letter, 15 October 1997) notes that the drawing 'shows the minister standing at the pulpit as if sermonizing; though there are other such representations in 18th century architect's drawings, they are a rarity'.
For other clerical staffage see East Stratton chapel [SM D1/7/3] and Micheldever Church [SM D2/12/15], [SM D2/12/12] and [SM D2/12/17].
The eight sides of the octagonal nave which are here 9 feet wide at the liturgical 'compass' points and 14 feet wide at the corners, have lancet and four-centred arches respectively. These are framed by a series of mouldings and without imposts, separated by engaged clustered shafts, and with equilateral (north, south, east and west) and drop-arched (at corners) lunette windows above.
REPRODUCED. Stroud fig.52a
