Unfinished design for a pier glass frame for the eating room, 1772, possibly executed (1)

Notes

Adam’s extensive designs for Sir Watkin’s London residence included several drawings for furniture and fittings, a large proportion of which are known to have been executed. Bolton’s visit to the house c1914, before its sale in 1920, recorded a number of pieces in situ.

This includes a console table surmounted by an elaborate pier glass frame, alongside four torchéres in the eating room.

Bolton notes several mirrors in situ at 20 St. James’s Square c1914, but states that several had been deprived of their ‘original cresting’, which he attributes to the simpler tastes of the Greek revival period.
