Purpose
Preliminary design for a chimney grate, ND
Aspect
Rough elevation of a chimney grate, with a pedestal ornamented with a palmette flanked by scrolling foliage. This supports fluted legs, an apron of enclosed palmettes, a base rail of guilloche, and a box-shaped fire basket with a circular grated opening, surmounted by palmettes and strigils. There is pencil underdrawing showing a wider arrangment, with the legs surmounted by miniature urns. To the right-hand side, there are alterative legs composed of acanthus leaves flanking a base rail with an apron of swags(?)
