[28] Preliminary design for a chimneypiece for the first library, c1777, possibly executed
Aspect
Elevation of a chimneypiece with Doric pilaster stiles ornamented with panels containing tripods supporting urns, surmounted by calyx, rosettes set within wreaths, and flora. Above this there are further panels which imitate fire screens and are ornamented with suspended urns, calyx, and arabesques. The stiles terminate in part-paterae and the capitals contain panels depicting draped figures, which are flanked by bands of drop calyx. The frieze is ornamented with pedestals bearing urns linked by swags and in between the pedestals there are rosettes set within wreaths crossed by thyrsi
