[4] Alternative design for a monument for Major André, c1781, unexecuted
Aspect
Elevation of a sarcophagus set within a trefoil-headed apse. The sarcophagus is supported by a plinth containing a tablet, and above this there is a further plinth ornamented with a band of fluting and a roundel depicting Britannia. The sarcophagus has socle feet, is ornamented with a panel depicting the death of Major André, and is surmounted by a curved lid embellished with ox skulls, swags and palmettes. The sarcophagus is flanked by sphinxes
