[57] Preliminary design for a chimneypiece for Lady Williams-Wynn’s dressing room, c1772, unexecuted

Aspect

Elevation of a chimneypiece, with the lining bordered with a band of laurel leaf tips. The stile is formed with an Ionic pilaster ornamented with arabesques, rosettes roundels and peltoid shields. The capitals contain cameos flanked by bands of drop calyx. The frieze is formed with a band of rosettes and swags, and a hexagonal band enclosing rosettes and calyx. The frieze has a central tablet containing an oval depicting a reclining figure, and this is flanked by calyx
