Purpose

[11] Unfinished design for a chimneypiece for the eating room, 1772, executed with minor alterations

Aspect

Elevation of a chimneypiece, with the lining bordered with bands of laurel leaf tips and fluting. The pilaster stiles are ornamented with panels containing suspended rosettes, and above this there are ram masks and scroll work ornamented with bands of beading and laurel leaf tips. The scroll work terminates in acanthus leaves. The capitals contain patera surrounded by calyx, and the frieze is ornamented with rosettes enclosed within wreaths. Above the frieze there are bands of laurel leaf tips, dentils and acanthus leaves
