[59] Design for a ceiling for Lady Williams-Wynn’s dressing room, 1773, unexecuted
Aspect
Plan of a rectangular, vaulted ceiling, flanked by rectangular compartments. The ceiling is ornamented with a central patera, set within a lozenge ornamented with corner fans. Beyond this there is an oval band of continuous wreaths enclosing rosettes, and this is segmented by pedestals with a turned support, which bear figurative cameos enclosed within bands of calyx. The corners of the ceiling are ornamented with calyx supporting anthemia and scrolled hearts, flanked by arabesques. The flanking rectangular compartments are ornamented with a rosette set within a wreath of calyx and surrounded by bands of calyx, all set within a symmetrical cruciform. Beyond this there are arabesques and bands of enclosed rosettes. This is flanked by irregular lozenges containing winged griffins set within a wreath of calyx and a band of inverted swags, and the lozenge is ornamented with corner fans set within a band of foil
