Purpose

[22] Alternative design for a ceiling for the first drawing room, 1773, unexecuted

Aspect

Plan of a rectangular, tripartite ceiling with a central square compartment ornamented with a rosette, and this is enclosed within a plain band and set within a band of wreaths. Beyond this there are festoons of husks enclosing paterae, drop calyx suspending oval figurative scenes, and a circular band of beading, all set within a lozenge. Beyond the lozenge there are further festoons which suspend figurative roundels set within wreaths, with aprons of scrolled hearts and drop calyx. The central square compartment is flanked by rectangular compartments ornamented with rosettes surrounded by calyx, and set within a band of lozenges. The lozenges are flanked by further calyx supporting anthemia
