[5] Unfinished drawing for the north front of a house, c1770, unexecuted

Aspect

Elevation of the north front of a two-storey, five-bay building, with a hipped roof, a part-sunken basement, and a Corinthian colonnade. On the basement storey there are Diocletian windows, with a band of Vitruvian scroll above, and on the raised ground storey there is a central entrance accessed via a balustraded, flared staircase. The central entrance is flanked by balustraded, full-height windows, and balustraded, Venetian windows. On the first storey there are half-height windows, and the building has a frieze of fluting and rosette roundels, with a band of dentils above. The central building is flanked by one-and-a-half-storey, balustraded link blocks, with half-height windows on the ground storey, and three-quarter-height windows on the first storey, with bands of Vitruvian scroll and string courses set in between. The link blocks connect to one-and-a-half-storey, three-bay, pedimented pavilions, surmounted by acroteria, and the pavilion to the east supports statuary. On the ground storey the pavilions contain half-height windows, with bands of Vitruvian scroll above.
