Purpose

[20] Plan of the ground storey for a building, 1767, unexecuted

Aspect

Plan of the ground storey of a thirteen-by-eleven-bay building formed around a square courtyard, with a stepped portico across the central five bays of the principal front. The entrance leads to a square hall flanked by apsidal ante rooms, with a dining room and drawing room beyond. The drawing room links to a circular drawing room with apses and the dining room leads to a circular dressing room with apses. Beyond the second drawing room there is a third and fourth drawing room. The fourth/grand drawing room has an apse on one long side and this is mirrored by a bow window with an external semi-circular, columnar screen and a curved flight of steps beyond. At the rear of the building the central three bays form a bow front. There is a central book room with columnar screens and this room leads to further book rooms with octagonal spaces beyond. On the right-hand side of the building there is a further book room, a double-heighted kitchen, dressing room and bedroom. There is an inner formation of rooms overlooking the square courtyard which includes a chapel, rooms for the Organ Barrills, servants’ rooms and an Instrument Room. At each corner surrounding the courtyard there is a staircase set behind a columnar screen set within a square stairwell
