Notes
The site of Adam’s Brasted Place was selected to incorporate the glen-like landscape to the south. This included a sunken path leading to Ide Hill, for which Dr Turton obtained an Act of Parliament, closing the highway, relocating to the public route 200 yards away. For the sunken path Adam designed a timber bridge, and although a bridge was constructed it was not to Adam’s design. The executed bridge was built in stone, creating a folly which included a tablet inscribed J.T. Anno Mundi MDCCXCVI. Therefore the bridge was built by Turton, some four years after Adam’s death.
The bridge incorporated an ancient stone cross, which had been relocated from a nearby wayside. It is thought that the cross originally related to a shrine visited by pilgrims on route to Canterbury.
