Designs for the west front, St John's, Bethnal Green, London, 1825, 1827 [4]
Notes
The first elevations for the church (SM 59/10/5; SM 47/5/57) show Soane thinking of a pared-down design. In all manifestations, the columns are replaced by giant pilasters with accentuated capitals. The earliest scheme has sets of small arch-topped windows at nave and gallery level, divided by a string course. The early designs have a square-stepped entrance, whilst the later ones (SM 47/5/63; SM 47/5/5) have a round-stepped entrance, and the windows are different. A notable feature is Soane's attempts at the tower design. In both sets of elevations Soane has a truncated tower alongside a typical three-tiered structure.
